Fundamental Movement Spectacular

Our Fundamental Movement Spectacular (FMS) is an awesome opportunity facilitated by our Activator team for year 1-2 tamariki to be exposed to fundamental movement skills in a fun and relaxed enviornment through the use of games and play.

These fundamental skills include:

• Physical movement skills,

• Knowledge & cognitive skills,

• Emotional & social skills

Sporting success can often be interpreted as high achievement. For the Selwyn Sports Trust, sporting success looks like ongoing participation in an active lifestyle! The basis of this sporting success is built through the teaching of fundamental movement skills in childhood through a developmentally appropriate approach.

Age Group

The Fundamental Movement Spectacular is designed for Y1 & Y2.

Aims & Goals

  1. Support Teachers and Parents in the assessment, planning and development of foundation skills such as balancing, running, throwing and catching, within a broad child centered framework supporting children’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.
  2. Increase teacher’s and parent's understanding of the critical importance of fundamental movement skills, and positive movement experiences for children.
  3. Recognises contemporary research concerning the central role that movement plays in learning and cognitive development, and aims to give teachers practical techniques to implement these findings and enhance learning outcomes for students
  4. Support teachers in delivering the objectives of the NZ Health and Physical Education Curriculum and the Key Competencies of the NZ Curriculum.
